Congratulations to Dr. med. Maximilian Berlet (Department of Surgery, TUM University Hospital, MITI Research Group), for winning the 2nd prize at the Innovation Session of the Computer- and Telematics-Assisted Surgery (CTAC) section of the German Society of Surgery (DGCH), at the German Surgical Congress 2025. His presentation on the innovative concept of Surgical Documentation Markup Modeling (SDM-M) convinced the jury, consisting of Prof. Dr. med. Christiane Bruns, Prof. Dr. Daniel Rückert, and Dr. Wolfgang Wein.
SDM-M has the potential to revolutionize surgical care. It can be used to create a digital twin of surgical patients, which accompanies them throughout their lives. Operations can be entered interactively in a digital 3D model and can thus be better understood by physicians providing further treatment. This could lead to significantly improved safety in surgical care and a reduced workload, paving the way for a more efficient surgical documentation.
The project was realized as part of the Clinical Scientist Program of the Commission for Clinical Research at Klinikum rechts der Isar (KKF). Based on SDM-M, further projects with clinical, scientific and industrial partners are now to follow, which will bring the concept closer to clinical application.
