This course offers a deep dive into clinical practice and current research topics. The students will prototype digital solutions to clinical problems as a part of interdisciplinary teams. During the first weeks, we provide introductory lectures on the interface between clinical practice and technical development.
The students completing this practical course successfully will acquire the following skills:
- End-to-end problem solving of real clinical problems, with access to actual medical staff
- Interdisciplinary scientific communication and teamwork
- Development of medical applications under consideration of clinical, regulatory and ethical constraints
In total 14 students can attend our course. They will work in groups of three students, composed of two computer science students and one medical student.
The students can choose from different research topics in the fields of Surgical AI/CV, HRI, LLM and Diagnostic Tool Development at the Research Group MITI. Students will get an introduction to our clinical working environment at the TUM Klinikum and introductory lectures by our surgeons and engineers. Each group will be supervised by a tutor for technical and medical input during weekly meetings.
Students will have the opportunity to observe surgical procedures to gain a deeper understanding of the clinical context and the requirements for integrating digital tools and robotic systems. The students will then work on their projects in close contact with our clinical and industrial partners. Within the first 3-4 weeks, the students will present their requirements and initial concepts in form of a kick-off presentation.
For excellent projects we provide the possibility of a scientific contribution to a conference or journal and/or networking opportunities (e.g. TUM Venture Labs).
If you would like to increase your chance for securing a place in our practical course, it is highly recommended to attend the preliminary meeting and send a letter of motivation (max. 1 page) to praktikum.miti.chir@mh.tum.de. The mailbox is now active.
