Francesco Stocchi, PhD

Francesco Stocchi holds a PhD cum laude in Legal Sciences and a Law Degree from the University of Milano-Bicocca, School of Law. During his PhD, he spent 3 months as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Zurich (UZH), Institute of Biomedical Ethics and History of Medicine (IBME).

He is currently a post-doc research fellow in Philosophy of Law at the University of Milano-Bicocca, School of Law, working on a project on ethical and legal implications of forensic neurotechnologies, supervised by Prof. Dr. Silvia Salardi, and a Lecturer in Philosophy of Human Rights and Pluralism.

He is a member of the Philosophy, Law, and Ethics for Technologies (PhiLET) research group that brings together the research outcomes, activities, and publications of the Chair of Philosophy of Law and Bioethics at the Department of Law at the University of Milano-Bicocca. He is a founding member of the TecSEDU Interdepartmental Laboratory (Emerging technologies, society, ethics, and human rights), University of Milano-Bicocca.

His visiting research at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Institute of History and Ethics in Medicine (IHEM), where he collaborates with the Lab of Ethics of AI and Neuroscience led by Prof. Dr. Ienca, focuses on the intersection between forensic neurotechnologies, research ethics, criminal law and human rights.

Francesco’s research interests include: conceptual analysis (concepts of freedom, responsibility, causality, law, power, rule of law); analysis of legal language and argumentative modes; the relationship between law and science (neuroscience); relationship between new technologies, power and human rights, neuroscience and criminal law; ethical-legal issues related to the discoveries and uses of neuroscience in forensic science; Ethical-legal issues related to frontier issues in bioethics (artificial intelligence, human enhancement, neurotechnologies); influence of neuroscience in the decision-making processes of judges and juries; neurolaw.
